Muybridge Udu Drum

Muybridge Udu Drum

The word "Udu" means both pottery and peace in the Ibo language of Nigeria. It's played by hitting the side hole with the palm, striking the earthenware shell with fingertips or knuckles, and/or covering and opening the top hole to alter the pitch. Some believe the deep haunting sound particular to the drum is the "voice of the ancestors" when used in religious ceremonies.

This Udu drum was pit fired, and using a proprietary process, a bird-in-flight design was stenciled and fired on above the side hole. The style was inspired by Eadweard Muybridge's iconic animal locomotion photography of 1887.
