This wall hanging Conchundo has the usual four finger holes as well as a tuning slide on the back for added versatility. The small hanging forms around the outside are whistles, pitched to compliment the notes of the Conchundo. When any two of these whistles are played at the same time, they create binaural beats-- like an auditory version of an optical illusion. Many people believe binaural beats possess abilities to alter your consciousness or heal what ails ye. Though fascinating, these theories don't interest me as an artist; I’m more interested in the particular aesthetic qualities of these unusual psychoacoustic phenomena. Depending on whether the “brain wave entrainment” theories pan out, it may eventually be possible to tap directly into the brain waves to trigger an aesthetic experience with sound waves.
